How to choose the best geraniums

If you’re looking for a tough, perennial plant for the border, hardy geraniums (also called cranesbill) are among the best. Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is one of the longest flowering varieties.

On the other hand, pelargoniums (which are often called geraniums) are tender plants perfect for a colourful summer display. Whether you want upright plants for containers or trailing varieties for hanging baskets, there’s a wealth of choice. Read our guide to planting hanging baskets for top tips and see our expert advice on growing pelargoniums for more help. Still not sure which variety to choose? Try our Frequently Asked Questions below.

Which hardy geranium is best for ground cover?

Geranium endressii is a good choice for ground cover. This cranesbill creates a compact mound of pretty pink flowers that last from May until September, spreading up to 100cm.

Which pelargonium is best for shade?

Pelargoniums need full sun to flower well, although they will all tolerate shade for part of the day. Geranium phaeum varieties, including ‘Joseph Green’ and ‘Sambor’, are ideal for shade.
