How to choose the best hedge plants

Whether you want to screen your garden from neighbours or divide your plot into different areas, a hedge is the perfect solution. Hedges are great windbreaks and choosing something prickly, such as holly, will help deter intruders too. Planting a hedge can also be hugely beneficial to wildlife. Choose bare-root varieties for a cost-effective solution or buy pot-grown plants for something that’s already in leaf. Read our guide to planting a bare root hedge for helpful tips.

Which hedging is best for wildlife?

All hedges provide shelter for wildlife but those with flowers or berries will also add food for pollinators and birds. Good choices include holly, blackthorn, pyracantha and crab apple.

Can you grow hedging in shade?

Which hedging is the tallest?

The tallest hedging is our Fagus sylvatica duo – green and copper beech – which can grow to 12m (40ft) tall.
