Cacti and succulents are perfect for filling sunny windowsills to give a low-maintenance and interesting display. These drought-resistant house plants come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and colours, including the striking Euphorbia Acruensis Cactus that reaches a majestic metre in height. Aloe and aeonium can be grown outside on patios or balconies during the summer, but need winter protection – either taking indoors or wrapping with horticultural fleece to protect them from cold, wet weather.

Many cacti and succulents will flower with the right conditions. The Christmas cactus has colourful flowers that appear at the end of the stems. Lithops have daisy-like white or yellow flowers, Aloe ‘Safari Sunrise’ will produce two-tone flowers all summer, and Echeveria ‘Purple Pearl’ has dainty flowers that are held above the leaves.
