Many shade-loving plants will grow happily in a pot. Among the best are camellias, ferns, hostas and hydrangeas.
Pachysandra terminalis, or Japanese spurge, Aucuba japonica, hypericum, and lamium are good choices for full shade. Ferns, hostas and brunnera are among the plants that are better in dappled shade.
No house plant will thrive in full shade, but we do offer a selection of shade tolerant house plants. Some will tolerate lower light levels and among the best is the aspidistra. Chamaedorea elegans (parlour palm) is also worth trying. Others, such as Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum’ (spider plant), Nephrolepis exalata (Boston fern), and Sansevieria trifasciata (snake plant) are best grown out of direct sun but in a bright spot.
