Salad onions, and radish take up little space, and lettuces can be tightly packed, grown as cut and come again crops. Runner beans are tall plants, but just four will produce a good crop and will fit into a large container.
Salads are known for their speedy growth. For the quickest harvest, sow radish or Lettuce ‘Salad Bowl’. After something with a bit more substance? Cucumbers or baby carrots will give you a harvest after just a few weeks.
Turnip, Chinese cabbage and kale will tolerate partial shade. Beetroot will grow in shade, but may take longer to mature.
