Why Grow Salad Vegetable Seeds?

Don’t think that all salad leaves are the same, there is so much variety. Suttons has an amazing range from ‘Andean Superfood mix’ to ‘speedy winter mix’ and great for a stir fry is the International ‘oriental wonder mix’. 

Keeping it international how about ‘French mix’. Easy to grow in limited space, containers, raised beds or open ground. There’s nothing quite like fresh, straight from the garden salad leaves, if cleverly sown you should be able to get a continuous supply pretty much all year round. 

How Do You Grow Salad From A Seed?

• Start your salad leaves off in early spring, you can beat the weeds by using fleece to warm the soil up. Sow in drills with a garden line. Packets of Suttons Lettuce seed are always generous so sow thickly and thin out. The thinning’s can go into the salad bowl
• Salad leaves can also be Sow in tray cells, a few seeds to each cell this decreases the chance of slug and snail damage. Growing in tray cells makes them excellent for gap filling in beds and borders or to plant containers or even in hanging basket
• Prior to planting, fork in an organic fertiliser as a base dress, a nitrogen high fertiliser such as chicken pellet would be good, but use sparingly. The occasional liquid feed will help also
• Keep the soil moist as the young plants start to grow, if left too dry your salad leaves will taste bitter
• The good old D/D/D rule applies to Lettuce, remove any dead, diseased or dying leaves, particularly any with mildew

For some fun why not grow salad leaves as edible bedding, mixing them with other edibles and lettuce varieties into a pattern. Once they grow begin grazing salad leaves, cutting the older leaves and letting the younger ones come again. Continual sowing is the art to salad leaf supply and freeing you from the expensive and slightly tasteless vacuum-packed salad leaves.
